Franz Schubert; Barbara Hendricks; Andras Schiff. Several minutes of heaven on earth. Astonishingly good, profounly moving. Thank you so much for this upload.
No dress would ever do justice to the incarnation of such a beautiful singer. Beauty is what she and Maestro Schiff have given us in this sublime interpretation of a sublime work by Schubert. I return again and again to this video and thank god for the artists which make life worth living.
Ma discriminare no!
I love that the audience response was included in this clip. It's the energy response to the performance that gets highly overlooked when uploading to RUclips.
What a touching performance! Hendricks doesn't amaze me in Opera in general, but as a recitalist and sacred music performer she has few rivals, especially because her singing has so much "soul". It conveys every feeling, every deep meaning of a word, and she really serves the music in a total way so that we feel "compelled" to forget everything else and just concentrate on the song.
@BirchBarlow Wonderfully said, that is precisely why I enjoy Barbara Hendricks so much. I have herard her several times live, and it has always been exceptional.
Schubert composed over six hundred songs and and miss hendricks beautiful haunting voice and wonderful iterpritation would do justice to evert one of them
Is it possible to improve the sound quality? I love this lady and this song, so I'd be very appreciative of clearer sound. With sincere thanks in advance.
@MuseDuCafe I agree completely with you. I've also seen/heard Maestro Schiff in several master classes on DVDs (part of which are (still hopefully) on RUclips which is where i first saw them). He is a wonderful musician. Italy's lucky that he's made his home there.
Schiff manages to set the mood perfectly from the very first notes and remains a completely reliable and sensitive pianist. Hendrick's scooping entry is not promising and I should not like the pronounced flutter but her sensitivity, spirituality and conviction carry the day creating something of real beauty that goes beyond mere perfection.
I like this approach to the opening note, there are many ways to express a word, a mood as you said..I like to analyze everything or find reasons for why things are done certain way, intuitively or premeditated and this first phrase is a descending line - so by her scoop she accentuates this motion. It's really very interesting to find out why artists do certain things, I play violin and sing, so it's wonderful to compare these two fachs. And I once got a compliment from a violin teacher how tastefully I used the portamento :)
@cramerhelen vitality struggling out of blocks of marble -- Very Well Put. Yes, it doesn't matter what Madame is wearing, does it, when the sound (and I include Maestro Schiff) is so perfect and complete?
@MuseDuCafe There's nothing to add, your comment sums up the beauty of this interpretation. I return to it often and hope that the person who posted this on RUclips doesn't close his/her RUclips account! I would feel very lost.
ive always loved Barbara Hebdricks musical gift a lovely woman! the dress however reminds me of an curtain or bed sheet -- still beautifully done i'm singing this in a recital next week and can aspire to sing as fluidly.
Very good and well controlled with her feeling and breath except slight scooping before each notes most of the time. And "O" in "Holde" should be more open and very closed in "mond". Overall she sings excellent. Her artistic performance reminds me of the great Roland Hayes. Bravo.
@MuseDuCafe Curious note to add to your comment "and I include Maestro Schiff" - i've been searching for a European vendor for the DVD for months and had given up. Today i tried what i thought was something ridiculous and did a search for Barbara Hendricks instead of Maestro Schiff and the DVD appeared in the list (gone now, last copy)
A beautiful, clear voice, but a little too much portamento for my liking (though not as much as some others I have heard). The piece reminds me so much of "Im Abendrot" by Richard Strauss: I am no musicologist, but cannot believe it did not influence him.
@orphyborphy This made me laugh, I wouldn't have dared make such a comment in front of such an awe-inspiring performance. However, if you ever have a chance to see the statues that pave the way to Michelangelo's Davide in Florence, you may have a sense of deja-vu (vitality struggling out of blocks of marble)!

Beautiful music. Stunning singer. This piece is most appropriate for weddings and funerals also.
Very touching, drove tears! Thank you Barbara!

Stupendous. Sit back, close your eyes, and be transported to a beautiful place. Thank you Maestra Hendricks.

Where is the rest of this recital? I would love to see it in its entirety.
@kaloolee Insight ready for the next time you sing it!
@checkerboardkid So would i, but i fear that the DVD that it comes from is unavailable in Europe
@MuseDuCafe Hahaha I think you must be right about all of that!
Is it just me or does anyone else thing this is oversung. Dynamic interpretation is interesting based off the pp mark in the composition.
Not in the least bit over sung... One of the best live interpretations I've ever heard.
A beautiful, clear voice, but a little too much portamento for my liking (though not as much as some others I have heard). The piece reminds me so much of "Im Abendrot" by Richard Strauss: I am no musicologist, but cannot believe it did not influence him.
An exquisite song exquisitely sung. I wonder why Schwarzkopf never recorded it.

terrible artsy photography. we just want to see her!!!!
But there is nothing funny about her talent
Way to much Vibrato for my tastes.
Not very good.
